2022 French Open quarterfinalist Holger Rune described Novak Djokovic as “simply impressive” following the Serb’s first-round performance at the Astana Open. Djokovic, 35, went all the way at the inaugural Tel Aviv Open last week.
After winning it all in Israel, Djokovic flew to Kazakhstan for the Astana Open. In his first match at the Astana Open, Djokovic destroyed Cristian Garin 6-1 6-1. On Twitter, one fan wanted to know Rune’s thoughts on Djokovic’s recent play.
“I think Djokovic is impressive coming from 5 matches and a final win in Israel and play amazing tennis in Astana managing jet lag etc. This is simply impressive,” Rune said of Djokovic’s first-round victory at the Astana Open.

Rune praised Djokovic’s performance versus Garin
Djokovic got off to a great start versus Garin, breaking the Chilean in the very first game of the match.
After losing the first two games of the match, Garin served out the third game to cut the deficit to 2-1. Then, Djokovic claimed back-to-back breaks and won the next four games to dominantly win the opener. After serving out the first game of the second set, Djokovic had a break point in the second game but just didn’t realize it.
However, not realizing a break point in the second game didn’t impact Djokovic, who claimed back-to-back breaks in the fourth and sixth games to complete a two-set victory over Chilean. After the match, Djokovic was visibly happy with his performance.
“From the start to the end, [it was] a great performance,” Djokovic said after ousting Garin. “Playing in a new tournament, different conditions, the first match is never easy. Obviously you are looking to see how you are going to adapt, but I did it perfectly, really, played as well as I can.
I just made him work and used every opportunity that was presented to me”. Meanwhile, Rune is taking a week off. Last week, Rune ended runner-up at the Sofia Open.
