Tiger Woods, 46, has announced that he will compete in the 2022 Augusta Masters, which begins on Thursday. This will be his 14-month return to competition following a car accident on February 23, 2021 in Los Angeles on his way to a morning shoot The way I feel now, I’m going to play. Woods, a five-time green jacket winner, hasn’t competed in a tournament since the Masters was moved to November in 2020 due to the pandemic. On the golf courses, he was only seen throwing balls in practice or in a parent-child tournament he participated in with his son Charlie last December, using a buggy to get around.
After four months of not being able to walk, his recovery from the accident that nearly put him back in a wheelchair, where he had broken both legs, appears to be adequate. All those who have seen the 15-time major champion play these days in Augusta say he has recovered his swing and that in distances, one of the handicaps he presented during the winter, he is already capable of reaching the average of the rest of the competitors, as he himself stated.
Woods’ long road to recovery
There had been numerous indications in recent days that Woods was on the verge of returning to the game. He went to Augusta National last week for a practice round, then returned Sunday saying he’d be a “game-time decision” and Monday for more. With bad weather forecast for Tuesday, he spent a lot of time in the practice areas.
It certainly a good sign seeing him make a comeback with suck a positive attitude, since the statements made when competed in the PNC Challenge in December, a 36-hole scramble on a flat Florida course, finishing second to John Daly and his son. Woods was permitted to use a cart in that event, and after the rounds were completed, he dismissed any notion that his game was ready for the tour again. It’s going to take a lot of work to get to where I feel like I can compete at these guys and be at a high level.
Woods appears to have changed his mind about three and a half months later. If he plays, he will be competing in the Masters for the 24th time; in his previous 23 appearances, he has finished in the top five 12 times.
He had his fifth back surgery two months later and was still recovering when he crashed his SUV, going over a median on a suburban coastal road in Los Angeles and down the side of a hill on Feb. 23, 2021.
Doctors considered amputation of Woods’ right leg before reassembling the limb by placing a rod in the tibia and using screws and pins to stabilize additional injuries in the ankle and foot.
