Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Kevin De Bruyne faces a lengthy spell on the sideline as he spoke this afternoon ahead of Manchester City’s clash with Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup in Athens.

City are competing in the Super Cup for the first time, having won their first Champions League title last season. They face perennial Europa League winners Sevilla, having comfortably beaten the Spanish side twice in the Champions League group stage on their way to winning the tournament.

The Blues have travelled to Greece without the injured Ruben Dias and Kevin De Bruyne, while Bernardo Silva is also absent through illness. John Stones missed the Burnley win with a minor injury, and has travelled but may still be a doubt. Joao Cancelo is not injured, but has been left out of the squad for the third game running.

City are looking to win the Super Cup to add to their collection, with players like Dias citing this competition and the Club World Cup as new competitions that the players are desperate to win this season.

Full story: De Bruyne out for ‘three to four months’

Manchester City are resigned to being without Kevin De Bruyne for months as they weigh up whether the star midfielder needs surgery.

De Bruyne fought his way back to fitness for the start of the season after snapping his hamstring in the Champions League final, having played with the injury for a few months at the back end of last season. The Belgian looked bright when he came on in the second half of the Community Shield but lasted only 20 minutes against Burnley before coming off with the same injury.

City initially feared it was a bad one and scans have proven them right. Guardiola said that there are alternatives, but could not hide the fact that it is a huge disappointment for the club that they will not be able to count on one of their players who is ‘irreplaceable’.

A decision will be made soon on the surgery, although City’s preferred specialist Dr Ramon Cugat has already seen the images of the injury as well as a few other doctors; all share the same opinion.

“It’s a serious injury. We have to decide on surgery but he will be out for a few months,” the manager said.
