David Benavidez could finally have the long-awaited fight with one of the best boxers in the world today against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and that if everything goes according to plan it would have to take place in 2024.

Benavidez is interim champion and mandatory WBC challenger to Canelo, who is undisputed champion, holding all four belts in that division. Just a few weeks ago the WBC convention was held, and Benavidez was confirmed as challenger.

But first he faces a big task on November 25 when he puts his World Boxing Council (WBC) interim super middleweight championship on the line against Demetrius Andrade at the Michelob Ultra in Las Vegas to be ratified as the mandatory.

“Interim champion David Benavidez, mandatory contender, will make a defense of his interim championship against Demetrius Andrade on November 25,” a statement on the WBC website said. “Following the outcome of this fight, we will confirm that Benavidez is the mandatory contender if he emerges victorious.”

When would the Canelo vs Benavidez fight be?

After his last fight, the September 30 win over Jermell Charlo, Canelo Alvarez said he did not know who his next opponent was in the second of three fights for which he signed a deal with PBC.

“I don’t know,” Canelo said after the victory by unanimous decision. “We’re going to talk to Al Haymon and we’ll see what’s next. On May 5, I don’t know who it is, I don’t give a f**k.”

Canelo has no shortage of opponents and he hasn’t ruled anyone out either. It has been said that the next on the list could be Terence Crawford, Jermall Charlo or David Benavidez.

The undisputed super middleweight champion has become accustomed to fighting twice a year in big dates for the boxing calendar and the weekends of May 5 and September 16, 2024, will be no exception.
