Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor vs Manny Pacquiao might be finally in the works but the UFC opposes

There is an interesting theory to why the UFC is taking so long to get Conor McGregor back in action and Manny Pacquiao is involved.

Ever since Conor McGregor has been ready to go back to the UFC, there have been many theories to why it has taken him so long to make that comeback. There is a new theory from former UFC fighter and podcaster Brendan Schaub that could carry some important weight to why this is happening. Schaub shared his insight into what could be happening behind the scenes between Conor McGregor and UFC president Dana White. This comes out at the same time Manny Pacquiao released a training video where he shows he is still fight to fight despite being 45 years old. It also paints a much more transparent picture into the combat sports business that regular fans don’t get to see often.

JUST IN: Manny Pacquiao: Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor Not on Priority List

The main reason Dana White decided to allow only Conor McGregor to fight Floyd Mayweather is very simple, he is the athlete that brings the most attention to the company by far. Out of the entire salary given to all UFC fighters combined, it has been reported that Conor earns nearly a third of that money all for himself. But there is a problem for the UFC as Conor’s contract only has a year left and they still haven’t gotten him to sign a new one. If he decided to leave the company, this would be a massive blow for the UFC in face of all their publicity deals for the future.

A great deal of the value these companies see in the UFC is due to Conor McGregor’s involvement. Brendan Schaub thinks that one of the main reasons his return is dragging so much has to do with the fact that he hasn’t agreed to sign a new deal yet. Brendan also thinks Conor McGregor prefers to fight Manny Pacquiao inside a boxing ring before he continues fighting inside an octagon. This means that if Dana wants to keep Conor in the organization, he will have a make it worth his while. All of this would explain why Dana White has unilaterally moved Conor McGregor’s next fight date from June 29 to the fall.

Manny Pacquiao Puts Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor Fights on Hold to Face This Active Boxer

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor seem to not be on Manny Pacquiao’s priority list at the moment. His former promoter, Bob Arum has revealed the name, Pacquiao remains keen on taking on right now.

Late last year, at the RIZIN 45 event, the Filipino fame made his plans apparent about a potential rematch with his former opponent, Mayweather. Later, in another revelation, his agent suggested that as the fighter hopes to make a comeback to the ring, Conor McGregor remains a name that he is strongly considering. These two potential matchups have the potential to create significant buzz in the boxing community, given the history between the fighters. However, the name that has now emerged from his camp for a potential opponent could raise some eyebrows.

92-year-old Arum, the founder and face of Top Rank, spilled the beans on whom Pacquiao is considering for his big comeback to the ring. Speaking to Pro Boxing Fans, the promoter noted, “Taylor can possibly get involved in a really bigger fight with Manny Pacquiao who’s talking about coming back, and mentioned Taylor is one of the opponents he’d like to fight.” While confirming that these were not just conjecture but actually suggestions by the fighter himself, Arum remarked, “That’s what Manny told me.”

The Scottish-Southpaw, Taylor holds a 19-1 record, and last fought Teofimo Lopez in June 2023, registering his career’s first dent on points. At the moment, the 33-year-old fighter hopes to undertake 3 fights this year, mostly at 140, but he remains comfortable pushing the boundaries up to 147 lbs.

Facing ‘The Tartan Tornado’ could be a significant opportunity for the retired boxer. Rather than taking on two opponents widely accepted from the same league and era, he could challenge a much younger, fresher, and more active talent, showcasing his prowess in the ring. However, within this context, the reality persists that the Mayweather and McGregor fights could evoke nostalgia, a sentiment that boxing always appreciates.

Earlier, Paradigm, a talent management company that held the rights to book fights for Pacquiao sued the 45-year-old for breaching their contracts. The same company also represents McGregor. In a voice message, he called on PacMan. He exclaimed to Manny in the message, “I’ll kick you in the head, in the neck, the inside leg, and take you off your feet and drag you by your ankle across the stage.”

In 2015, ‘Money’ Mayweather, in the final stages of his career, defeated Pacquiao in a highly-watched Las Vegas fight. The bout etched itself in history by generating approximately $600 million in revenue. A rematch between them could have a similar impact. Who do you think Manny Pacquiao should fight next?
