The Winter Cup is a qualifying event for the 2024 U.S. Gymnastics Championships and also selects the junior and senior national teams. However, despite their aspirations for Olympic glory, it seems that the two icons, Simone Biles and Suni Lee, are missing out on this vital competition.

In an Instagram post by USA Gymnastics, the account shared the “Women’s Winter Cup entry list.” On the list were formidable names like Isabella Anzola, Jordan Chiles, Zoe Miller, Skye Blakely, Nola Matthews, Gabby Douglas also making a comeback, Trinity Thomas, and many other junior and senior women who were competing in the event. However, notable absences from the list included Sunisa Lee and Simone Biles. But it’s not just these two icons, Lee and Biles, who are sitting out the Winter Cup 2024.

Shilese Jones, who also won medals at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, also seemed to be missing from the list. Other missing competitors include Jade Carey, the 2023 Swiss Cup winner, and Leanne Wong, another world championship competitor, who are currently busy competing for their college teams in the 2024 NCAA season. Additionally, Joscelyn Roberson, who was at the Worlds last year, is recovering from an ankle injury and was also missing from the list. Despite the icons missing in action, the 2024 Winter Cup will be a thrilling spectacle.

The 2024 Winter Cup schedule

The 2024 Winter Cup is scheduled for February 23–25, 2024, at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville, Kentucky. The competition will feature both junior and senior women competing. The junior women’s competition is scheduled for Friday, February 23, at 7:00 PM Eastern Time, while the senior women’s competition is on Saturday, February 24, at 1:00 PM Eastern Time.

After showing her adoration for the world’s leading brand in gymnastics attire, GK Elite, US artistic gymnast Sunisa Lee’s recent chic hairdo for a photoshoot captivated the attention of fans. The 20-year-old Sunisa Lee’s latest Instagram story captured her with reputed hairstylist Christina Antonette, exuding joy in a white bathrobe. Meanwhile, Christina looked equally delighted in her black hoodie.

Sunisa Lee shared the IG story with a heart emoji. Christina Antonette also shared a shooting video featuring Lee in her story. This will surely remind the fans of what Suni had said on an earlier occasion: “I love fashion so much and when I’m not in my leotard, I love putting looks together.” While it is glad to find Suni in this color, the gymnast has yet to clear the air about Paris 2024.

Road to Paris ridden with uncertainty

Sunisa Lee’s creativity also expands to gymnastics, as Lee wants to give a special name, ‘The Lee,’ to her full twisting Jaeger move. But fans are not sure how long they have to wait for this. In February 2023, Suni was diagnosed with a serious kidney problem that led the doctors to ask her to abstain from training and competing. This created havoc in her gymnastics career.

She abruptly ended her collegiate gymnastics career. She also withdrew from major events like World Championships and the Pan American Games. All these have cast doubt on Lee’s participation in the upcoming Olympic games. Olympic trials in Sunisa Lee’s home state of Minnesota are scheduled for June 2024. It remains to be seen if Suni comes back to her old glory before that.

Simone Biles will participate on September 19 and 20 in Katy (Texas) in the selective prior to the announcement of the U.S. women’s teams for the next World Artistic Gymnastics Championships (Antwerp, from October 30) and the Pan American Games (Santiago of Chile, from October 20). On the other hand, reigning Olympic champion Sunisa Lee has ruled out competing due to a kidney ailment.

Biles, the most decorated gymnast in U.S. history, an absolute winner at the Rio 2016 Games but who withdrew during the Tokyo 2020 Games due to mental health problems, has expressed her willingness to compete in Paris 2024.

The U.S. women’s team has already qualified for the Games, but the country’s top gymnasts must compete against each other in the coming months for a spot on the national team.

If she earns her spot for the world championships, Biles would compete in Antwerp in pursuit of her sixth all-around world title. The first she won precisely in the Belgian city in 2013 and then followed those in Nanning (China) 2014, Glasgow (UK) 2015, Doha 2018 and Stuttgart (Germany) 2019. In total, between individual and team events, Biles has 19 world golds, three silvers and three bronzes.

Sunisa Lee, who after the withdrawal of her teammate won the gold medal in Tokyo 2020, has been suffering from kidney problems since last March and medication prevents her from training at the pace required to prepare for a world championship, said the gymnast. This does not rule her out for the Games, whose selective will be held next year.

Along with Biles, 18 other gymnasts, including Olympic medalists Jade Carey and Jordan Chiles, will participate in the Katy tournament.
