Claressa Shields entered the ring at her heaviest fighting weight and left with the quickest win of her career.

The self-proclaimed GWOAT (Greatest Woman of All Time) won her fourth divisional with a second-round, technical knockout of Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse. Three knockdowns forced a stoppage at 1:09 of round two Saturday at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.

With the win, Shields claimed the WBC heavyweight (though technically light heavyweight) and WBO 175-pound titles in the DAZN main event. She is now a four-division champ after a stellar amateur career where she won back-to-back Olympic Gold medals.

“I shocked myself, I’m not gonna lie,” Shields told DAZN’s Al Bernstein.

Shields (15-0, 3 knockouts) hadn’t enjoyed a knockout finish in seven years, almost to the day. Her last one came in her first title win, an Aug. 2017 5th round stoppage of Nikki Adler also in Detroit. Shields won the WBC and IBF super middleweight titles that evening to begin her pound-for-pound run.

Championship wins followed at middleweight, junior middleweight and back to middleweight. Shields fully unified the divisions (twice at 160) but has already run out of challenges at those weights. Evidence of that was in her inactive stretch of nearly 14 months.

With that came the decision to climb further up the scale.

Lepage-Joanisse (7-2, 2 KOs) attempted the first defense of the title she won earlier this year. The 29-year-old Quebec native edged Abril Argentina Vidal (10-2, 4 KOs) via split decision on March 7 in Montreal. It was her fourth straight win following a stoppage defeat to Alejandra Jimenez in their Aug. 2017 WBC heavyweight title fight.

Shields proceeded with caution in the opening round. Primarily a boxer (and a gifted one at that), the intent was to feel out the naturally heavier Lepage-Joanisse and test her own power in a new weight.

The returns were a pleasant surprise.

“I went in there real slow in the first round,” acknowledged Shields, who was a career heaviest 174.8 pounds. “I’m no dummy. Vanessa is a heavyweight and she was punching.

“When the hook hit her, I was like damn. I knew I was strong in camp and I was super strong [on Saturday]. Maybe I can stay at heavyweight.”

Lepage-Joanisse was visibly rocked near the end of the first round. Shields kept throwing punches until the bell. Despite the defending titlist remaining on her feet, the confidence was there that the stoppage was on its way.

Shields delivered in a big way.

A clean right hand floored Lepage-Joanisse early in the second round. Referee Ben Rodriguez issued a count while Lepage-Joanisse’s corner appeared ready to stop the fight. Shields was summoned to continue and sent her down twice more before the fight was brought to a halt.

“I guess the ref wanted me to throw one more right hand to put her down,” noted Shields. “The GWOAT stays.”

The question now is whether Shields will stay at this weight.

The fight was billed as a heavyweight title fight, only because of how the

BC brands anything above 168 pounds. Shields believes she can still fight as low as 154 for the right opportunity, or back to 160 where she remains the undisputed champion.

The feeling of not having to cut weight also has her considering a future in her most recently conquered division.

“I’m the cash cow, the girls who got the belts at 168 gotta come up to fight me,” insisted Shields. “It’s just 175. It wouldn’t be that big of a leap.”

Shields is now 12-0 (2 KOs) in title fight spanning four weight division and The Ring’s reigning pound-for-pound queen.

The “GWOAT” also picked up the WBO light heavyweight world title.

If there were any questions about how Claressa Shields would fare at heavyweight Saturday night, she crushed them just as she did Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse.

The “GWOAT” (Greatest Woman of All Time) dropped Lepage-Joanisse three times in the second round toward a sensational second-round TKO to become the new WBC heavyweight world champion at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan, and live on DAZN. Shields (15-0, 3 knockouts) also picked up the vacant WBO light heavyweight title in the process.

With the victory, Shields adds the heavyweight and light heavyweight titles to her previously won undisputed crowns at middleweight and junior middleweight, and unified titles at super middleweight, now making her a five-division world champion.

After establishing the jab to start piecing together combinations in the first round, Shields produced a ferocious second round. The fireworks started when Lepage-Joanisse made the costly mistake of rushing Shields against the ropes. Shields responded by ducking and dodging everything Lepage-Joanisse threw at her only to catch the Canadian with a right hand to the temple for the first knockdown.

Lepage-Joanisse would slowly get up off the canvas only for Shields to rush her this time and absolutely sit on an overhand right across the jaw to leave the Canadian in a heap for the second knockdown.

That vicious knockdown prompted Lepage-Joanisse’s trainer to get up on the ring apron in preparation to throw in the towel but Shields saved him the trouble by knocking her down for the third time, forcing the referee to stop the fight.

Following the win, Shields was in awe of her own performance, telling DAZN: “I shocked myself” and “I put her down three times, so hey, the GWOAT stays.”

She added that “maybe I can stay at heavyweight if I’m going to be this strong inside the ring.”

Here’s how the entire main card went.

Simone Biles is making her return to Olympic competition on Sunday even more hotly anticipated with the possibility she may perform another new move.

The American, the most decorated gymnast in history with 37 world and Olympic medals, will get the first chance to try to get an uneven bars skill named after her in the women’s qualifying event at Paris 2024.

The 27-year-old already has five other eponymous skills but this would be the first one on bars and would make her the only active female gymnast to have one on all four apparatus.

She submitted the original skill to the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) technical committee last week and so if she performs it cleanly here in Paris, it will bear her name.

How to watch Simone Biles go for Olympic gold -- again

Biles is back on the Olympic stage three years after pulling out of several events at the last Games in Tokyo with the ‘twisties’ – a disorientating mental block.

She already announced her arrival as a huge favourite to add to her seven Olympic medals when she nailed her Biles II vault in podium training on Thursday – the most recent of the skills named after her.

She and her American team have been keen to keep the pressure off her at these Games, with her coach fulfilling media commitments on her behalf and the gymnast herself being reassured that she does not need to compete in all events.

Bars would be the most likely one she would opt out of – with it being her ‘weakest’, if you can call an apparatus on which she has a world silver medal. Perhaps you can if ‘just’ one out of 30 world medals has come on bars.

However, with this new skill in the mix, that now seems unlikely.

She is scheduled to begin her qualification round at 10:40 BST on Sunday, the session after Great Britain’s women begin their Olympic campaign (08:30 BST)

FIG describes the uneven bars skill as “a clear hip circle forward with one-and-a-half turns to handstand”.

In other words, when she starts in a handstand on the upper bar, the American would dip her body to travel around the bar and then rise back into a handstand before doing one and a half pirouettes (540 degrees) and then stop to hold a handstand position.

The governing body says if she attempts the skill it is likely to be at the beginning of her routine where she performs a Weiler. The new skill is a variation of the one first done by Canadian gymnast Wilhem Weiler.

“In order for the move to be named for her, Biles will have to perform it without a major fault at some phase of the competition in Paris,” said FIG, which has given it a difficulty value of 0.5 points., external

What skills does Biles have named after her?

Biles already has five elements named after her – two vaults, two floor tumbling skills and a beam dismount.

Only Soviet five-time Olympic champion Nellie Kim has more, with seven.

Biles’ most recent eponymous skill – the Biles II vault – was on show in podium training at the Bercy Arena in Paris on Thursday, where she landed it perfectly.

She only added this skill – a Yurchenko double pike – last year and so if she performs it at these Games that would also be an Olympic first.

The five skills she has named after her are:

Biles on floor: double layout with half-twist ie a double somersault in stretched position with a half twist (named after her in 2013)

Biles II on vault: Round-off on to board, back handspring on to vault, then double somersault in piked position (named after her in 2023)

Not every day goes the same for everyone. Former Olympic gold medalist Serena Williams recently showed that even a legend like her has bad days. Two days back, she participated in the Paris Olympics opening ceremony and was spotted quite uncomfortable while carrying the Olympic torch on the Seine. While she somehow held herself together to avoid sheer embarrassment, the former WTA legend later disclosed what she went through at that moment.

Williams was invited to carry the Olympic torch across the Seine along with Rafael Nadal, Carl Lewis, and Nadia Comaneci. The ceremony entertained the viewers with extravagant celebrations. However, Williams, dressed in a full-sleeve bodycon chiffon red dress, met an uncomfortable situation on the boat due to her motion sickness. Not only was she drenched in Paris’ rain but the former Olympic gold-medalist WTA star was visibly losing grip to stand on the boat.

Serena Williams is 'sexy and strong' in this white bikini photo

She was slipping while she waved at the people while carrying the torch. Later that day, Williams shared her experience making people aware of her excitement to perform the act despite being uncomfortable on the boat. “Alright that’s a wrap on everything. It’s been heck of a night. I was in the boat and it was pouring rain, my lashes just came off, my hair came down. It’s a miracle I’m still put together. I thought for a minute I was in a wet t-shirt contest but I was at the Olympics,” she said.

Williams was also spotted standing nervously on the boat at some point. Despite trying hard to hold the torch, this former world’s no 1 tennis player handed it over to Comaneci, who helped Williams stand on the moving boat.

The clip on social media brought a moment of laughter among people and showed how celebrity athletes also face unexpected situations that land them in trouble. Not just Comaneci but Williams’ former colleague Rafael Nadal also helped her sit properly on the boat as she was slipping while nervously waving at the spectators.

Serena Williams’ misery didn’t end there as her husband faced another embarrassing moment at the ceremony. Despite being a famous businessman and sports investor, Ohanian didn’t seem popular enough in France compared to his talented wife.

Media commentators mistook Alexis Ohanian for Serena Williams’ umbrella holder

Williams attended the Paris Olympics opening ceremony with her elder daughter Olympia and her husband Alexis Ohanian. When Williams and her family started walking on the red carpet, unexpected rain started and Ohanian had to hold an umbrella for his family.

One Eurosport commentator mistook Ohanian for Williams’ umbrella holder and said, “She looks absolutely incredible, she’s got someone just behind us holding an umbrella. Those are the levels you aspire to, to have an actual umbrella holder behind you.” This statement caught the Reddit co-founder’s attention too. However, instead of being mad, Ohanian took it sportingly, and it certainly makes for a good anecdote!

Serena Williams’ presence as one of the Olympic torch-bearers is truly a moment of pride for all Americans. The way she handled her situation well despite her discomfort, Williams deserves a round of applause.

OLEKSANDR USYK’S team have set a staggering price for a “complicated” trilogy fight against Anthony Joshua.

Usyk ripped away the unified WBA, IBF and WBO belts from AJ in 2021 before retaining them in their rematch a year later.

Krassyuk told Boxing King Media: “Anthony Joshua was talking about the third fight. He’s a great champ.

“He’s changed a lot since the two fights with Usyk. We’ve seen him going down and see him rising up.

“It’s also a complicated fight to make. I’ll tell you why – because now we are on different levels.

Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority boss Turki Al-Sheikh has declared that he wants Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford soon but warned the Mexican not to overplay his hand regarding fight purses from the potential bout.

Crawford, aged 36, holds a perfect 40-0-0 with 31 KOs and has an exceptional reputation as a multi-weight champion whilst he is also the current WBA and WBO welterweight king after previously being undisputed before losing the IBF belt for contractual reasons.

Whilst Canelo, aged 34, is 65-2-2 with 39 KOs and has held belts in four boxing weight classes as well as becoming the only ever undisputed super-middleweight champion before he lost his IBF belt for contractual reasons. He is currently ranked as the fourth-best boxer pound-for-pound as a highly skilled counterpuncher.

So, a bout between the pair has been long anticipated and now Turki Al-Sheikh seems keen to make it happen as Saudi Arabia continues to become the dominant force in the modern boxing market, although there is a warning.

“I will give Canelo the price I think is fair. If he accepts it, he will deal directly with me to finalise the deal,” Al-Sheikh said, as per ESPN. “I don’t want anyone in the middle. I guaranteed Crawford a big fight.

“I want Canelo for Crawford, and Crawford wants Canelo but if Canelo goes crazy [with his financial demands], I’ll still guarantee Crawford any fight he wants.”

When could Canelo vs Crawford happen?

The mouth-watering fight between two highly-skilled, very durable, very intelligent and exceptionally proven boxers will have to wait until 2025 due to current obligations for the pair in 2024.

Crawford is due to fight at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on August 3 against Israil Madrimov for the WBA super-welterweight title, whilst Canelo will clash with Edgar Berlanga on September 14 in Las Vegas.

For Canelo, that would only leave 10 weeks to recover and prepare a training camp to face Crawford in 2024, which is too tall an order even for someone with his reputation and legacy in boxing.

Floyd Mayweather continues to attract the headlines even after dipping out of the professional boxing game in 2017 as he and his girlfriend went viral for their fancy outfits as they toured Monaco in Europe. So, who is Gallienne Nabila, and what do we know about her?

The 47-year-old athlete for all his showmanship is known for keeping his personal life strictly private meaning glimpses of potential companions are few and far between.

The pair are sporadically spotted with public appearances such as shopping or travelling and they’re also regularly sighted at NBA games for the Los Angeles Clippers in California, so it seems that she is the one with his heart.

However, it will remain to be seen whether she appears at his upcoming exhibition fight against John Gotti III on August 23 in New Mexico, when Mayweather will bid to put a definitive end to the feud after his rival attacked him after the bell in 2022.

PARIS — With many from around the world giving Rafael Nadal his proverbial flowers at these Summer Olympics, the famed tennis champion tried convincing them Saturday night his career is far from over.

After putting on a strong, energetic and, at times, vintage performance in the opening round of men’s doubles matches at Roland Garros, Nadal hinted that he doesn’t think the book on his longtime rivalry with fellow Grand Slam champ Novak Djokovic is about to close.

Asked if he was ready for a potential “last dance” with Djokovic in singles competition during the Olympics, Nadal had a quick quip.

Where does Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic stand among tennis' greatest ever rivalries?

“Who say that’s last dance?” he said.

Nadal, who is representing Spain at the Olympics, made the comment to English-speaking media in the postmatch mixed zone following the 7-6(4), 6-4 victory he and doubles partner Carlos Alcaraz posted over Argentina’s Andres Molteni and Maximo Gonzalez.

The comment came moments after Nadal had also expressed uncertainty about even playing in Sunday’s opening-round singles competition against Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics.

According to The Associated Press, Nadal said: “I don’t know if I’m going to play or not.”

He added that he wanted to consult with his team after Saturday’s action “and then make the smartest decision possible to have the best chances to bring [a] medal back home.”

But if Nadal is going to bring back a medal for singles play — let alone face Djokovic for a 60th career time — he will have to play Sunday. A win over Fucsovics would advance Nadal into a second-round match against Djokovic on Monday or Tuesday.

Earlier Saturday, Djokovic, who is representing his native Serbia, said he was excited about their potential final meeting.

“If we get to face each other, it’s going to be possibly the last time we’re going to face each other on a big stage,” Djokovic said. “So I’m sure that people would enjoy it. I’m looking forward to it, and I’ll be ready for that matchup.”

Djokovic leads the all-time head-to-head series, 30-29. If he and Nadal square off in the second round, it would mark their earliest meeting at any main draw at a tour-level event.

The last time they faced each other, Nadal beat Djokovic in four sets in a 2022 French Open quarterfinal that lasted more than four hours. Nadal went on to win that Open to claim his 14th victory on the very clay courts hosting Olympics competition.

“Playing him is like finals, in any tournament,” Djokovic said. “Particularly here, knowing what he has achieved and what he’s done for our sport, but particularly here at Roland Garros, his record speaks for itself.”

In Saturday’s match, Nadal and Alcaraz played supporting yet starring roles. From the moment the pair walked onto the closed-roof courts during introductions, many in the crowd voiced vociferous support for them.

Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic head-to-head and best matches

At least twice during breaks in game play, the heavily Spanish crowd erupted in chants of “Rafa! Rafa! Rafa!”

“[It was] an emotional night, an electrifying night, amazing crowd,” Nadal said. “To play with Carlos on this court has been so special. I’m just super happy about the victory. It gives us a chance to keep going.”

Regularly, the pair took moments between games to talk strategy. The veteran Nadal wasn’t always the one leading the discussions, either.

One of multiple non-French athletes to participate in the torch relay portion of Friday night’s Opening Ceremonies, Nadal has long been considered the king of Spanish tennis. Just as he nears the eventual end of his storied career, Alcaraz, 24, has stormed the world stage, appearing to be the heir to Nadal’s throne after winning four majors in the past three years.

In part because of Alcaraz’s rapid ascent, Nadal wanted to play doubles with him in Paris. But does playing with his longtime hero put pressure on Alcaraz?

“No pressure, but nerves,” Alcaraz said. “A lot.”

Centre-back returns to France after making only 21 appearances for the Blues in four years

Chelsea have announced the early termination of Malang Sarr’s contract after the defender agreed to join RC Lens.

The 25-year-old former France youth international made just 21 first-team appearances in four years with the Blues. During that time, he had loan spells with Porto and Monaco.

On Friday, Lens announced the signing of Sarr on a two-year contract, including the option to extend by a further season.

Chelsea

Sarr played for France at every age group bar the seniors but struggled to make an impression at Chelsea after joining them from Nice in 2020.

A statement from Chelsea on Saturday evening read: “Chelsea Football Club and Malang Sarr have agreed to terminate the defender’s contract.

“The Frenchman departs Stamford Bridge having made 21 appearances since joining in August 2020. Sarr spent time on loan at Porto and Monaco during his time at the club.

Chelsea has agreed to a deal in principle to sign Villarreal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen and Boca Juniors defender Aaron Anselmino.

Jorgensen, 22, is set for a medical after a £20.7m fee was agreed and expected to sign a seven-year contract until 2031.

The Denmark Under-21s international was a major target of new manager Enzo Maresca, who wants an additional goalkeeper capable of using the ball well with his feet.

Jorgensen will compete to be the club’s number one, but his move puts Djordje Petrovic’s future in doubt after the Serbian stopper filled in for the injured Robert Sanchez last season as first choice.

Spaniard Sanchez spoke about facing renewed competition after he started in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Wrexham in their first pre-season match.

“You never know, but at the moment I am training hard,” said the former Brighton keeper, 26. “Another goalkeeper? I know what I can bring to the team, what I can do and I am positive in myself.”

Jorgensen is expected to join up with Chelsea for their US tour, with matches against Celtic, Club America, Manchester City and Real Madrid to come.

Meanwhile, centre-back Anselmino will cost 15.6m but will go back on loan to Boca Juniors until at least January.

The 19-year-old is regarded as an option for the future in the same vein as their other young signings from South America, like Ecuadorian teenager Kendry Paez and Brazilian Estevao Willian.

Anselmino will also sign a seven-year contract until 2031, but Chelsea can only spread the transfer fee for both players over five years in their accounts, as per Premier League rules.

Both signings will take their summer spending to around £110m, though they have brought in around £85m in sales.
