Multiple times in the past, Mayweather has expressed interest in owning an NBA franchise and made headlines recently when he revealed he was willing to buy a team for $2 billion.
“It could be the Vegas franchise, it could be the Seattle franchise, or I could be buying a franchise that’s already up and running.” While fans await further updates on this, his love for the sport was on full display during Puerto Rico’s Celebrity Basketball Game.

‘Money’ Mayweather was named the Superior National Basketball 2023 MVP of the Celebrity Game after leading Team Arroyo to victory. His team beat Team Barrea 66-65 in a thrilling contest. Mayweather scored an impressive 23 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and had 3 steals while shooting 55% from the field (10/18 FG). Moreover, he seemed to be enjoying his time playing basketball in Puerto Rico.
“Puerto Rico is a great place. So many beautiful people. The atmosphere is crazy. I’m just happy to be here. I love the game, you know? Puerto Rico, JJ Berrera, Arroyo. So many people and great players from Puerto Rico. I’m having fun,” he said in the post-match interview.

While Mayweather’s passion for basketball may come as a surprise to some, it’s not entirely unexpected. The 46-year-old wants to purchase an NBA team and revealed his plans of doing so in a public press conference, as reported by NBCSports. He stated that he along with his business partners are looking to make moves in the NBA and even offered $2 billion to purchase a franchise. “So the first offer, we offered them a little over $2 billion for majority ownership. Do I have it? Absolutely, I have it, but it didn’t happen overnight. It didn’t happen overnight. It’s a lot when you have so many different businesses all around the world. It’s a lot,” he said.
While Mayweather did not reveal which franchise he was looking to buy, many have speculated that it could be the Phoenix Suns. Another option that has been speculated is the Portland Trailblazers. It will be interesting to see if Mayweather’s bid to purchase an NBA franchise comes to fruition.
