Over the past few years, the lower weight classes have been the most compelling in boxing. Even as some of the higher weight classes have seen long-awaited fights come together, the depth of stars around the lightweight and junior welterweight divisions make the divisions consistently compelling.

The 135 and 140-pound divisions also benefit from a variety of unique personalities that draw attention beyond their elite boxing skills. From Gervonta “Tank” Davis emerging as arguably the face of boxing to Ryan Garcia’s bizarre behavior mixing with his talent to create entirely unique situations, the divisions never fail to provide entertainment.

Boxing: Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia: Canelo Alvarez, Mike Tyson and Devin Haney debate fight of the year | Marca

As we head into the final handful of months in 2024, the CBS Sports boxing experts sat down to look at the current status of the top names at lightweight and junior welterweight, as well as what could be next for each fighter.

Lightweight

Gervonta “Tank” Davis (WBA lightweight champion): Davis, along with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, has established himself as the “face of boxing.” He has done so mainly through carefully constructed matchmaking. After being elevated to full champion status in November when Devin Haney moved up to junior welterweight, Davis defended his title against Frank Martin. The Martin fight was the first world title fight for Davis since October 2020, but his style and personality has made him a bigger star than a constant stream of world title bouts could ever have. Davis has any option he desires moving forward. While there has been much talk of a fight with Shakur Stevenson, that feels like a fight that isn’t going to happen until at least mid to late 2025, if at all, with Stevenson set to fight Joe Cordina on the undercard of Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol. Negotiations for a fight with Vasiliy Lomachenko fell through for Davis, which leaves Denys Berinchyk as the only other fighter with a world title in the weight class if Davis is looking to chase more gold. — Brent Brookhouse

WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis vs. WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson is a fight everyone in the combat sports world desperately wants. However, the burning question on everyone’s mind is, will such a matchup ever transpire? Former Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe has shared his thoughts on the question.

Stevenson is about to get back in the ring against Joe Cordina on October 12th at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, having signed with Matchroom Boxing recently. Meanwhile, Davis was supposed to fight Vasyl Lomachenko in a unification bout later this year, but the latter pulled out of the conversation to spend more time with his family. Regardless, speaking to Ellerbe, a reporter from Fight Hype couldn’t help but raise the Davis vs. Stevenson issue.

Gervonta Davis: An uncertain future

During a discussion on the upcoming Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga fight, set for September 14th in Las Vegas, the reporter turned the conversation to what’s next for the current face of boxing. Ellerbe, who has been beside Davis for a long part of his career, gave a cryptic but promising response: “We going to see. He’s going to let you know.”

Anthony Edwards gets a shout-out ahead of his new role! The Minnesota Timberwolves guard is fresh off his national duty and the first thing he picked up is not a basketball. The 23-year-old strapped boxing gloves on his bare knuckles in the lead-up to the much-awaited Saturday scrap between Floyd Mayweather and John Gotti III. Above all, T-Rex A. K. A. Claressa Shields dropped a personal note to the Olympian on his special role.

The long overdue boxing exhibition between Mayweather and Gotti III is finally on the cards. The last time the two pugilists took to the ring, fans couldn’t witness a result as the match came crashing down on the 6th round after the mayhem outside the ring. After a year, the fighters have come together for another face-off. But this time, the undisputed money will have a special company. It’s none other than Anthony Edwards.

According to TMZ, Ant-Man and Anthony Davis would accompany Floyd Mayweather to the ring on Saturday. So, the fans expect the two Olympians in Mexico City for the August 24 event. Moreover, ahead of the matchup, Edwards dropped a video on his Instagram. It was a video of gloved-up Edwards, throwing punches at a trainer. The baller certainly seemed to be prepared for the boxing game, even though he would be off the ring. Notably, he received a shout-out from Claressa Shields as she wrote, “Ok ok favorite!!!” in the comments.

Notably, this isn’t the only time when the new WBC heavyweight champion is involved in Anthony Edwards’ affairs. But before we head to that, let’s clear out the Floyd Mayweather business. Why are Edwards and Anthony Davis accompanying him to the ring? Well, this isn’t the first time. Earlier, Mayweather walked in with Justin Bieber and Lil’ Wayne by his side. Moreover, Jarred Vanderbilt is also expected to join the NBA duo.

Claressa Shields publicly backs Anthony Edwards

In the last few days, Noah Lyles and Anthony Edwards hit the headlines after the sprinter’s statement resurfaced again. Ahead of the Paris Olympics, Lyles has done some damage to Edwards in an interview with Sean Gregory. Apparently, Adidas had invited Lyles for the Ant-Man signature shoe launch event, which the sprinter didn’t turn up.

Speaking of which, Lyles said, You want to do what?’ You want to invite me to [an event for] a man who has not even been to an NBA Finals? In a sport that you don’t even care about? And you’re giving him a shoe?” And went on to make a case to get himself a signature deal with the sporting brand.

While the Wolves guard remained silent about the interview both during the time of its release and after it was resurfaced, Shields didn’t keep quiet. The boxer reshared Lyles’ comments on her X handle and wrote, This looks [like] jealousy to me.” Days later, she has given a shout-out to the star’s new role in the Mayweather fight. Ant-Man certainly has a star cheerleader off the court.

The former Heavyweight champion warned his fans of attempted scams from one of his big brands

Back in early April, Mike Tyson’s ‘Hotboxin‘ podcast recorded its last episodes and the former boxer made the announcement via his social media. Several months after his announcement, there seem to be attempts at booking new guests to the show under the same brand and without Mike Tyson. This constituted as a fraud and Mike Tyson warned all of his followers of what’s happening. The way this fraud is being committed is through emails that are sent to a lot of people whose data has been breached. Tyson announced the issue and reminded everyone that ‘Hotboxin’ is no longer in production. Mainly, the ones who were attempted to be scammed were former guests.

Mike Tyson denies ‘Hot Boxin’ is still in production

Mike Tyson decided to post an Instagram story where he talks to his fans that he was made aware this is happening. This is the message he sent everyone from his social media: “It has been brought to our attention that there have been fraudulent attempts to reach out to people to be booked on hotboxing. We would never reach out from a Gmail address. Hotboxin’ is no longer in production. Please DM in any instances of fraudulent activity or report on the contact page of miketyson.com.”

Mike Tyson had one of the most popular podcasts in the world, he was one of the most thoughtful podcast hosts who didn’t mind getting a little vulnerable speaking with his guests. But Mike decided to end a brilliant and wildly successful 262-episode run that broke people’s hearts when he made the announcement. ‘Hotboxin’ remains as one of the most enjoyable podcasts in recent history and everybody hopes it returns with Mike Tyson as the host someday.

The highly anticipated showdown between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson is just around the corner, set for Friday, November 15th, at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The exhibition match, titled “The Baddest Man on the Planet,” will be available for streaming on Netflix, adding to the excitement for the fans.

Paul, a former YouTuber who turned to boxing, improved his record to 10-1 with seven knockouts (KOs) after his victory on July 21 in Florida. This win came in a match against bare-knuckle fighter Mike Perry, as a replacement for the originally scheduled fight between Paul and Tyson. Meanwhile, Tyson, who has a professional record of 50 wins and 6 losses, is a former heavyweight champion and will be 58 years old at the time of the fight.

Paul and Tyson are now focusing on the bout after it was postponed due to a health emergency Tyson experienced. Despite the setback, Tyson has confirmed that his doctors have cleared him to resume training and has taken his preparation to return to the ring very seriously.

While most would jump out of their skin if Mike Tyson tried to punch them, Floyd Mayweather had a completely different reaction.

The rivalry between the pair of boxing titans came to a head during the WBC convention at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, back in 2015.

Blessed with Earth-shattering power and a fearsome aura, Mike Tyson is undeniably one of the most terrifying men to have ever set foot in the ring.

With his infamous peek-a-boo smile, the legend bobbed and weaved in front of his opponents before unleashing his trademark combinations that, once detonated, resulted in his rivals crashing towards the canvas.

Following a successful career, Tyson hung up the gloves, leaving the door open for Floyd Mayweather to take the baton and become the next star of American boxing.

With frightening speed and precision, he started his career as ‘Pretty Boy’ before later transitioning into the defensive genius referred to as ‘Money’.

While the legend possessed remarkable skills inside the squared circle, it was his larger-than-life personality that attracted the fans.

Whether people wanted to see him win or lose, they tuned in to watch the chaos unfold.

Despite appreciating the Michigan fighter’s greatness, Tyson took exception to the four-weight champion claiming he was better than Muhammad Ali, with the heavyweight branding the icon ‘delusional’ during an interview with UCN.

Thus, when the pair met on stage, ‘Iron’ pretended to throw a punch at Mayweather, before chuckling and walking away.

However, while most would probably implode at the mere thought of the ex-heavyweight champion hitting them, to his credit, the Hall of Famer didn’t even flinch.

Shakur Stevenson continues to chase fame and fight with Gervonta Davis. Till now, he has failed in his endeavors, as ‘Tank’ has charted his boxing path. But the boxing landscape is transforming quickly, especially with Stevenson, 27, and Eddie Hearn joining hands. It might turn out to be the partnership that the WBC champion needed to bag big names and fights. But what happens when two archrivals collide? Who will have the upper hand? The British promoter explains.

Stevenson, at 22-0, is highly regarded for his technical skills, whereas Davis, at 30-0, has built a fearsome reputation with his knockout power. Therefore, it will be an exciting fight between two boxers with contrasting boxing styles. But if Hearn, 45, is to be believed, skills will overwhelm the power, and there are other factors influencing the fight’s result.

gervonta davis and  Shakur Stevenson

The British promoter detailed his stance in a conversation with Fight Hub TV as he picked Stevenson to bag the win against Gervonta Davis. He listed the champion’s pro record and his boxing IQ as additional reasons that could turn the tides in his favor. Hearn said, “For me, I back Shakur Stevenson in that fight. I think he is a complete fighter. He is not underrated, he is 27, he is a three-division champion. His IQ is on another level. Tank is a great fighter. But I believe Shakur Stevenson beats him.”

The Matchroom lynchpin then also revealed the timeline of the hypothetical fight between the two. “I don’t think we’ll see that fight this year. But I do think we’ll see that fight in 2025!”

Andre Ward insists Canelo Alvarez and Gervonta Davis are the two most prominent figures in boxing right now.

Boxing has seen a resurgence in recent years with a new era of stars being born after  Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao hung up their gloves.

Heavyweight has always been seen as boxing’s glamour division with some huge global names competing, but some of the lower weight classes have also produced the sport’s biggest superstars.

And boxing legend Ward, who retired undefeated as a two-weight world champion, believes 168lbs champion Alvarez and 135lbs champion Davis are currently carrying the torch.

Canelo Alvarez and Gervonta Davis

“If I had to say who’s the face of boxing now, I think the face of boxing is a two-headed monster right now,” he told All The Smoke Fight.

“I think it’s Gervonta Davis — you cannot deny what he’s done, you cannot deny what he generates, and you cannot deny the performances — and you also cannot deny what Canelo Alvarez has done for a very long time.

“I think one thing they both have in common is Gervonta had Floyd Mayweather, Mayweather gave a cold alley-oop to Gervonta, Gervonta took the alley-oop and took it to the next level.

“If you look at the history of Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo Alvarez had an amazing alley-oop from Oscar De La Hoya, the biggest fighter in the game at one point in time and the biggest Mexican fighter before Canelo came.

I'm the FACE OF BOXING” — Gervonta Davis Tells Canelo Alvarez: Your time is UP - YouTube

“You have to give both of those fighters credit because they took the alley-oop and they did something with it.

“A lot of fighters fumble the bag or fumbled the alley-oop or fumbled the ball — they didn’t do that.”

Ward even later included current pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford in the list, who added to his portfolio of achievements with a world title win in a fourth weight class earlier this month.

Alvarez has had a stellar career in the squared circle, emerging as a superstar after high-profile duels with the likes of Shane Mosley, Mayweather and Miguel Cotto.

As anticipation continues to build ahead of the Jake Paul – Mike Tyson bout in Texas on Nov. 15, the divide continues to grow between those who believe 58-year-old Tyson will swat aside his 27-year-old challenger — and those who think Paul is going to vanquish the former heavyweight champion.

Whichever side of the aisle you’re on, the Paul – Tyson bout is undoubtedly one of the most highly-anticipated pro fights in years. It will be streamed live on Netflix from AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, and the 31-year age gap between the combatants is among the largest in the sport’s history.

Russell Crowe and Joe Rogan sound off on Paul-Tyson

Mike Tyson admits he's 'scared to death' about Jake Paul fight | Fox News

The three-decade age differential between Paul and Tyson as often cited as definitive proof that one boxer or the other will win this bout in November. Film star Russell Crowe is the latest to use that argument in support of his predicted winner: Iron Mike.

“The thing is, I was quite enjoying the second phase of Mike’s life,” Crowe told Joe Rogan on the latest episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience.” “I was terrified of him as a boxer. He was terrifying. Even when I met him backstage at a stadium one time at a fight, I was like ‘I’m still terrified of you.'”

Gladiator” and “The Nice Guys” star Crowe told Rogan of his concern that Tyson has to “slide back” into the fearsome “warrior” that captured attention and transformed boxing in the 1980s and the 1990s. And even though he has reservations about the bout, Crowe finds it difficult to back the abrasive and confrontational Paul.

“I just hope for the both of them that it transcends the circus type atmosphere, it’s a legit fight and nobody gets hurt. … But it’s Mike Tyson (as opposed to another boxer), so it’s very different,” Crowe said.
