CANELO Alvarez and Gervonta Davis are two of the biggest pound-for-pound superstars, yet neither have worked with Turki Alalshikh.

Just over two months remain until the one-year anniversary of Riyadh Season in boxing. Ever since Tyson Fury fought Francis Ngannou in the ‘Battle of the Baddest’ on October 28, 2023, Saudi’s grip on the sport has tightened like an Olympian clinging to a gold medal. To many, the involvement of his excellency has revolutionised professional boxing.

The best fighting the best, undercards infused with 50-50 matchups, and some of the most popular boxers competing regularly – life was injected into a struggling niche.

One where hardcore fans got the occasional ‘big fight’ yet were often left frustrated with the business of boxing preventing or delaying numerous super bouts from happening. Meanwhile, casual fans sometimes struggled to fully invest in shows with boxers they were not aware of, besides no compelling narratives or rivalries.

Furthermore, despite the majority of Riyadh Season taking place in the Middle East, Turki put together a stacked card on US soil with Terence Crawford, Andy Ruiz and Jarrell Miller all featuring on August 3. Then, on September 21, Anthony Joshua faces Daniel Dubois for the IBF Heavyworld title at Wembley Stadium as part of Riyadh Season.

Indeed, some would argue the Saudi’s involvement is slowly turning boxing into the UFC. Although instead of Dana White as the sole leading figure, you have Turki along with leading promoters such as Eddie Hearn, Frank Warren, Oscar De La Hoya, and Bob Arum. And rather than all fights being shown on ESPN in the US and TNT Sports in the UK, everything is broadcast on DAZN worldwide.

But unlike the UFC, being a cash cow gives you the freedom to do whatever business you choose. Anthony Joshua is a bit of an anomaly due to having a career-long contract with Matchroom. But with his status alone he could work with any promoter or broadcaster while negotiating the exact purse for a given fight.

In fact, there’s only one person who earns more than Joshua inside a boxing ring and that’s Canelo. After leaving Golden Boy and De La Hoya in 2020 to become a free agent, Canelo has been like a monkey swinging from tree to tree, always looking for the best fruit. It doesn’t matter what branches he breaks, there’s always another route for him because of the commercial value he provides.

However, last week we saw a power struggle in the boxing kingdom. Turki was open about potentially matching Canelo against Terence Crawford until the American moved up to 154 lbs and did just enough to beat Israil Madrimov to become a four-division world champion. After announcing his newfound disinterest in Canelo-Crawford, the Mexican superstar basically told Turki he was the boss and negotiations would be done on his terms.

Suddenly, the boxing fraternity saw the first signs of animosity from his excellency, who bit back by claiming Canelo is not interested in tough fights since suffering a convincing loss to Dmitry Bivol in 2022. And stated the former pound-for-pound king is scared to face Crawford and David Benavidez.

Following several successful cards featuring elite fighters, Turki has become accustomed to putting together the bouts he and the majority of fans want to see. This includes Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk which birthed the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999. Plus, one of this year’s most highly anticipated contests between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol for all the belts at 175 lbs on October 12.

Turki entered the boxing realm to bring an end to the politics, successfully uniting former arch-enemies Hearn and Warren. Yet his recent online spat with Canelo may show he doesn’t possess all the power and he might need to play second fiddle to a couple of boxers at the very top.

From the outside, Canelo only needs Turki for one fight – Benavidez. An opponent the Guadalajara native has openly asked for $200 million to share the ring with and a figure no other promoter can supply. Notwithstanding, if Canelo decides to try and capture a world title in a fifth-weight division like cruiserweight, it’s possible he would want some extra compensation from the Saudis.

As for Davis, he once said that Turki needed to send two Ferraris for him to compete in the Middle East. His excellency retorted back with the offer of two gloves instead. Tank is not on the same commercial level as Canelo, yet this was another example of a cash cow refusing to adhere to Turki’s suggestions.

Davis doesn’t swing from branch to branch like Canelo, yet he’s a bee with access to a lot of honey in the form of the PBC. The Baltimore puncher is one of the biggest stars in America and after being the main event in his last ten fights, Davis is making millions of dollars. The Davis-Garcia bout broke PPV records by amassing over $100 million in revenue.

UPDATE:Why Gervonta Davis: targeting alternative fight after Vasyl Lomachenko collapse

So, similar to Canelo, Davis may only need to work with his excellency if he wants additional compensation for a particularly risky fight. Shakur Stevenson is seen as the toughest available opponent for Tank. Time will tell if Davis gets the Saudis involved to make it happen.

To sum up, Turki Alalshikh has undoubtedly made a positive impact on boxing. Nevertheless, those benefiting the most from his excellency’s involvement are arguably boxers who weren’t previously getting the life-changing purses and career-defining opportunities. One example is Martin Bakole, who captured his best win against Jared Anderson and is likely to feature on more Riyadh Season cards.

Yet for Canelo and Davis, who have the luxury of picking any opponent they want while still generating huge purses, Riyadh season might remain separate from them. However, the more everyone works together in boxing, the more memorable nights there will be for fans.

The path is clear for Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson to make an all-American lightweight unification fight.

Davis was elevated to full WBA Champion when Devin Haney moved up a division and successfully defended his belt with a clean knockout of fellow-southpaw Frank Martin.

Fans stunned as Gervonta Davis shares ‘lookalike’ Jursly Vargas who has 100 per cent knockout ratio

Stevenson fought for the vacant WBC belt against Edwin De Los Santos and then defended it against Artem Harutyunyan, both wins coming comfortably over the distance but being criticised by some for being less than entertaining. Shakur hit back at the doubters by saying he would perform at his best when he faces the best.

Enter ‘Tank’ Davis, who is now without an opponent due to IBF Champion Vasiliy Lomachenko backing out of early negotiations.

What makes things simpler still is the fact that Stevenson has now entered a period of free agency after a long stint with promotional giant Top Rank. Head honcho Bob Arum, although he may not be involved in making it happen at this stage, predicted the fight earlier this year.

He told Boxing Scene that not only does he believe Stevenson beats Davis, but Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez do too.

“Tank Davis is an excellent fighter and a big attraction. So sure we’d like to match [Stevenson, Lomachenko, and Lopez] against Tank Davis and see how well they would do. I like our guys to win the fight … All three would beat Davis. I really believe that … but that’s why they do the fights, right? Again, we’re open to any of that.”

‘Tank’s co-trainer, Kenny Ellis, recently said that the only way the fight won’t happen is down to fear on Stevenson’s part.

Even Shakur Stevenson has admitted that Gervonta Davis is a special fighter. On Cigar Talk, the boxer from Newark did not hesitate to state that Davis was blessed with a God-given ability to knock out his opponents 90% of the time. Simultaneously, opposing all the doubters, Shakur argued he could give ‘Tank’ a run for his money. However, ShowBizz the Adult remains unconvinced.

Since Vasyl Lomachenko is not “in the mood” for ‘Tank,’ Team Shakur Stevenson is ready to negotiate with Gervonta Davis. Following Lomachenko’s unprecedented exit which has been compared to Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race, Shakur’s co-manager told BoxingScene, “It’s all up to ‘Tank.’ The one thing about Shakur [is] he will take anyone you put in front of him.”

However, ShowBizz the Adult just cannot see a way Shakur can possibly beat Gervonta Davis! “Shakur has slickness but he’s not slick. The best way to explain this is Devin Haney. Devin Haney is not slick, he’s athletic. But, he’s not slick,” he began. So, who has got the slickness?

Tank“, answered ShowBizz the Adult. “Tank was in there swimming without getting wet. And countering, he’s actually the slick fighter,” he added. In his opinion, Shakur Stevenson is more “elusive“. “He also doesn’t hit hard enough to hurt Tank,” ShowBizz continued, fearing Stevenson would be intimidated by Davis.

Tank will knock him out. I put $10,000 on Tank for the knockout,” he concluded confidently on his stream. Although ShowBizz the Adult expected Shakur to be intimidated by Davis, Shakur’s co-manager felt otherwise.

Shakur Stevenson is not afraid of Gervonta Davis

Other than ShowBizz the Adult, Kenny Ellis, one of Gervonta Davis’ coaches, claimed that only fear could prevent Shakur Stevenson vs. Tank Davis. “The only thing that can stop that fight is fear,” Ellis said, doubting if Shakur was serious about facing ‘Tank.’ But, Shakur’s co-manager, Josh Dubin is confident that the WBC Lightweight champion truly wants the fight. “He’s been begging for it for a long time,” Dubin said.

What Shakur wants to do – let me say it plainly – is to unify at 135,” he added. In Dubin’s opinion, as Lomachenko understood he would potentially lose against Davis, the Ukrainian boxer walked away. However, it is not the same with Shakur. “Shakur’s own enemy is his own greatness and other peoples’ fear of him,” Dubin added. “Personally I like Tank a little bit more. He’s a very smart fighter. Very smart, very cunning. He’s fast on the counter punches and I just think he’s got a lot of skill. People just think that he’s a power puncher, a heavy puncher, but he’s also very technical and he knows how to pick his shots, when to pick his shots.”

The good news for fans is that all of these predictions may soon be put to the test. Davis is now free of an opponent following collapse of negotiations with IBF Champion Vasiliy Lomachenko, meaning he can unify his WBA belt with Shakur’s WBC should both sign to do so.

UPDATE:Davis and Shields have had a public disagreement in the past, with Davis making derogatory comments about Shields

‘Tank’s co-trainer, Kenny Ellis, said the only thing that can stand in the way is ‘fear’ and pointed to Stevenson’s recent promotional free-agency as another obstacle avoided.

As for Leo, after losing his belt to Stephen Fulton he mounted a featherweight campaign and returns to the ring next month in an attempt to become a two-weight world champion against Mexico’s Luis Alberto Lopez.

Tank needs to be the one to make the decision, as long as it’s financially viable.

Alot of high-profile boxers are currently in holding patterns when it comes to deciding what their next moves will be. Canelo Alvarez still doesn’t have an opponent for September. No one knows what Devin Haney might do after the Ryan Garcia debacle. And Gervonta Davis just saw a potential opponent, Vasiliy Lomachenko, fall through.

That last big name is of particular importance to Shakur Stevenson, who is coming off of a recent victory and needs a notable win to stave off the criticism. Fighting and beating Tank would certainly accomplish that, and it sounds like Stevenson is open and willing to making it happen.

Shakur Stevenson waiting for Tank Davis to make the call

Stevenson’s co-manager, Josh Dubin, spoke to BoxingScene on Tuesday and revealed that they’re just waiting on Davis to come through.

It’s all up to Tank. The one thing about Shakur: he will take anyone you put in front of him. We’re here and waiting and ready to negotiate. We’ll know how realistic [it] is by how financially viable they make it for Shakur… [We] have our phone lines open, ready for a call, and they have our numbers. It’s a fight Shakur really wants. He’s been begging for it for a long time.

It appears that Stevenson wants it badly, but it will come down to the numbers, as is usually the case when two elite boxers try to plan a fight. We’ll see if both sides can make sacrifices and come to a compromise some time within the next couple of months.

After the longest layoff of his professional career, Gervonta Davis “Tank” made a triumphant return to the ring, reminding the boxing world of his formidable one-punch power.

Davis secured an eighth-round knockout against Frank Martin on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, retaining his WBA lightweight title.

Gervonta Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) showcased his signature power with a devastating left uppercut followed by a straight left, sending Martin crashing into the ropes and onto the canvas. This victory marked Davis’s fourth consecutive knockout win. Despite conceding five of the first six rounds to gather data on his opponent, Davis ended the bout in spectacular fashion.

Gervonta Davis' Next Opponent In Doubt After Talks With Loma Break Off

“A couple rounds, I didn’t feel like I warmed up completely like I wanted to, but I did warm up as the fight was going on,” said Davis, who was fighting for the first time in 421 days. “I knew that he was going to tire down, so I was just standing there, being a target for him so he could tire himself out. And once he tired himself out, I started picking him apart.”

Entering the seventh round, Martin (18-1, 12 KOs) held a slight edge in power punches, leading 37-31 according to CompuBox statistics. However, Davis reversed this margin dramatically by landing 19 power punches to Martin’s 11 in that round.

The seventh round set the stage for Gervonta Davis brutal finale. He stalked Martin into the corner and began unloading a flurry of punches. A clean left hand stunned Martin, and Davis unleashed another powerful shot that sealed the knockout victory, drawing cheers from the announced crowd of 13,249.

Davis had not fought since his seventh-round knockout of Ryan Garcia in April 2023, also in Las Vegas. His time away from the ring included a 44-day stint in a detention center for violating the terms of his house arrest related to a car accident that injured four people, including a pregnant woman.

“I’ve been around for a long time,” said Davis, whose right cheek was swollen and red from absorbing blows in the early rounds. “I’ve been training since I was 7 years old and competing since I was 8. It’s like second nature. It’s about staying focused, making sure my mind is on a goal, and that’s always to come out on top.”— Gene Wang

Gervonta Davis is one of the most ferocious champions in the sport of boxing having knocked out all but two of his 30 opponents.

Now WBA Lightweight World Champion, ‘Tank’ from Baltimore made his first defence of the belt with a knockout win over previously undefeated Frank Martin.

In his typical fashion of giving away a few rounds to lure his opponent in, the 29-year-old found his opportunity in the eighth to lay fellow southpaw Martin flat on his back.

He is one of four champions in the 135 ranks, joined by Shakur Stevenson, Vasiliy Lomachenko and Denys Berinchyk.

Bob Arum Says Gervonta Davis-Shakur Stevenson "Only Ends One Way"

In an interview with The Only Kayla, two-weight undisputed champion Claressa Shields defended Stevenson for hitting back at criticism he has received due to his last two performances. In doing so, she named his as the only fighter who has a chance against Gervonta Davis.

“This boy got three-time division world champion, silver medal at the Olympics, one of the best fighters in the world right now. The only threat to Tank Davis right now is Shakur. And you just told this man he’s a s**t fighter. He spends every day in the gym trying to get better and be a great fighter. You can say that to him, but when he comes back to you and says something now you’re hurt and sad.

One of the most sought after fights in the sport, Davis-Stevenson became more realistic this week.

Gervonta Davis: Claressa Shields responds strongly to Gervonta Davis' personal attacks - "You can't keep a woman"

‘Tank’ was previously in early talks with another champion in Vasiliy Lomachenko but the Ukrainian has decided he is not currently motivated enough to take the fight.

That leaves the door open for Shakur, who recently became a free agent, to step in and negotiate the fight all boxing fans want to see.

Gervonta Davis is moving on from Vasyl Lomachenko.

The pair were deep in negotiations to square off this year in a WBA and IBF lightweight world title unification clash.

It is understood that talks between Bob Arum’s Top Rank (who promote Lomachenko) and Al Haymon’s PBC (who represent Davis) were progressing well for a November fight date.

However, the Ukrainian slickster has opted to take some time out of boxing and won’t return to the ring until 2025.

Davis’ team was understandably taken aback by Lomachenko’s response, who has always sought the biggest fights possible during his 21-fight (18-3) pro career.

But instead of sitting around and waiting for Loma, Davis’ co-trainer Kenny Ellis has indicated that they may target a fight with WBC champion Shakur Stevenson next.

Speaking to Mill City Boxing, he said: “He [Loma] is straight ducking… Hopefully, Shakur won’t duck.

“They keep saying that Tank is ducking Shakur, let’s see. Him and Lomachenko are the only ones left.”

Asked what Davis would do if a fight with Stevenson or Lomachenko can’t be made by next year, Ellis added: “It’s up to Tank and what he wants to do but he might retire.

“If he does I support that, whatever he does I’ll support it. If he said let’s get the next one, I’ll support it.”

This comes after Lomachenko’s manager told boxing reporter Steve Kim: “Loma is not in the mood right now.

“He doesn’t have the motivation at the moment. He’s taking off, he wants to spend more time with the family.

“He doesn’t want to do anything until the end of the year. So he’s definitely not coming to the ring until the end of the year…

“With Loma, just money is not what motivates him. He doesn’t take anything just because of money.

“You can offer him millions, tens of millions of dollars – if he doesn’t have motivation, he’s not ready to prepare for the fight.”
